What do you expect someone to search for in Google so that they find your website? When you do this initially, you won’t have any data to check so you’ll have to try think up keywords yourself, analyse competitor websites to see what they use and uses tools like Google AdWords Keyplanner to get some ideas of keywords used in your line of business.
Each webpage should be optimised for a specific keyword or phrase. Trying to optimise one page for too many key phrases could have a negative effect so keep it simple. If we take the example of a flower shop and keep our goal in mind, increase sales on Mother’s day. Then our key phrase could be something like “Mothers Day Flowers”.
Competitor analysis is a great way to see what you’re up against but be wary that just because your competitor is doing something, it doesn’t make it right. Use a keyword analyser to scan a competitors webpage and see what keywords are being picked up. You should also use search engines like Google. Search for your key phrase and see what results come up. This will quickly give you an idea about what you’re up against.
If you’re in a particularly competitive area then you might want to consider taking a different strategy. Instead of trying to compete head on with the big names in your Business, you can target long tail keywords. These keywords won’t be searched for as frequently. This is not necessarily a bad thing. If you optimise of a long tail keyword then you can get your web page to the number one result quicker because less websites are optimised for that keyword. It’s better to be the number one result for 10 searches a week than number 94 for 10,000 searches. If you’re paying to appear in search results (AdWords) then long tail keywords will be cheaper per click. You can use this to your advantage.
As you grow your business and tweak your SEO strategy then you can move towards the more common keywords.
How do you know if you have a good keyword for your web page? Ask yourself, if someone searches for that key word and find your website then will they find what they were looking for? If the answer is yes then that keyword has some value to you, if not then carry on with your SEO keyword analysis. Once you start collecting analytical data you can see solid information on whether the keywords you have are working for you or not.
