What can we expect from the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5? both due to be announced over the next few weeks. Rumours are ripe thanks to “leaks” on the Korea Herald; larger screen, no bezel, finger print scanning.
A larger screen is probably a sure thing on both, finger print scanning I can take or leave but no bezel is interesting. For those who don’t know, the bezel is the border between the edge of the screen and the edge of the phone.
The Galaxy S4 that I use has an extremely thin bezel on each side of the screen. It makes the screen seem bigger and cuts down on how much blank plastic I have to look at. After all, I’m only interested in whats on the screen.
This may be true but what has been interesting is noticing how others hold my phone when trying it out. Quite often their fingers will accidentally stretch the length of the bezel and touch the screen. This creates a contact point their unaware of and the screen won’t react to their intended touch as expected. So imagine if there was no bezel?
How do you hold your phone?
It’s not something you normally take stock of, right? but take a moment. If you’re at home, chances are it rests on your palm. But if you’re in public, do have more of a grip? After all the chance of a snatch thief is a strong possibility so you grip a little further around the phone.
I’m sure everyone has their own way of holding the phone and not all would fall foul of no bezel but I wonder what percentage would? I wonder Apple or Samsung have underestimated that percentage? And can we expect to see phone covers in the near future that provide some bezel for phones that don’t have it?
Then again, it’s just a rumour at the moment.
